From New Beginnings to Tax Leadership: Anna Li’s CPA Journey
When Anna Li, CPA immigrated to Canada twenty years ago, she brought with her a background in international business – but not accounting. Her introduction to the profession came unexpectedly while working as an administrative clerk at an investment brokerage firm, where she handled bookkeeping on a daily basis. What began as exposure soon evolved into curiosity, and eventually, a clear sense of purpose.
Today, Anna is a Tax Manager at William & Partners LLP, where she helps individuals and businesses navigate complex tax matters with clarity and confidence. We sat down with her to learn more about her journey, her experience in tax and how the CPA designation has impacted her career.
What led you to pursue a CPA designation?
When I first arrived in Canada, I was focused on building a new life and career. I began working as an administrative clerk in an investment brokerage office and bookkeeping was part of my responsibilities. The more I worked with financial records, the more interested I became in understanding the bigger picture behind the numbers.
When my daughter was two years old, I decided to pursue the CPA designation. I realized I wanted more than a job – I wanted a career where I could make a meaningful impact. I genuinely enjoyed accounting, especially the challenge of simplifying complex financial and tax issues so people could make informed decisions with confidence.
What is the most useful skill you’ve gained as a CPA?
As a Tax Manager at a public accounting firm, I work closely with individuals and businesses to interpret tax legislation, ensure compliance and develop strategic plans that support long-term financial health. Through the CPA program, I gained a deep technical understanding of taxation, but I also learned how to think critically and approach problems strategically.
The program helped me see that tax is not just about filing returns – it’s about helping clients make better decisions. Whether it’s identifying opportunities, managing risk or planning ahead, I rely on those skills every day.
What was the most challenging part of getting your CPA designation?
Coming from a non-accounting background meant I had to start from the foundation. I returned to school to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting while working full-time and raising my family. Balancing those responsibilities required discipline and focus.
The flexibility of the CPA program made a significant difference. It allowed me to move forward at a pace that worked for my life circumstances, which made the goal achievable.
How does your designation support business growth in Canada?
Tax plays a critical role in business sustainability. My work goes beyond meeting filing deadlines. I help clients understand the implications of their financial decisions and ensure they are compliant with government requirements.
By identifying opportunities, reducing risk and helping businesses plan effectively, I contribute to their stability and competitiveness. Those everyday decisions add up and support broader economic growth.
What would you say to someone considering becoming a CPA?
If you don’t come from an accounting background, don’t let that discourage you. Start by identifying the steps you need to take and set realistic milestones. Stay focused on your plan and avoid distractions that don’t align with your goal. Persistence makes a difference.
“Because I am a CPA, I have access to opportunities that allow me to continue growing professionally and building a strong, dynamic career.”
