CPA students are eligible to have up to 12 months recognized, as well as the competencies that were developed during this time, for positions that ended within the last 5.5 years prior to your practical experience requirements (PER) Start Date.

Although there is no official deadline, students in EVR should submit any prior experience to CPA Ontario for review by the “Next CPA Review” date found in PERT.

You do not need to request a pre-assessment of the role for prior experience.

Students in a PPR only need to request a CPA Review for prior experience if it took place with a different employer/program, as this needs to be reviewed separately. It’s best not to leave this until you are at completion (or have changed jobs), as that would require additional review time and delay your review for your current experience.

You will be sent an email reminder when it is time to update your current reporting, based on your “Next Experience Report Date” in PERT.

To create a new experience report, log in to PERT ► Experience Reports tab ► click Create Report ► select report type (Current Experience, Prior EV, Prior PPR) ► fill in required information ► click Save. You can begin your self-assessment within the competency tabs.

Note: For students in a PPR, you should be using the initial report you created to get on the roster when completing your first self-assessment.

Yes, as long as your self-employment does not involve providing accounting services to the public or practice in public accounting. If in doubt, email the Practical Experience team. Please note, additional information will be requested by CPA Ontario throughout the practical experience reporting process and you will be required to provide samples of your work experience.

There are five different reporting statuses, depending on your experience path and where you are in your practical experience journey.

• Pending Enrolment: A student has updated their PERT profile to indicate their experience path as Pre-Approved Program Route (PPR) and is awaiting employment confirmation from their PPR.
• Pre-Assessment Required: A CPA student has updated their PERT profile to indicate their experience path as Experience Verification Route (EVR). A pre-assessment must be approved by CPA Ontario for their current role.
• In Progress: Once employment is confirmed/approved, the student is now in progress. If a mentor has been added, the PER Start Date will populate, and reporting can begin.
• Unemployed: A student is not currently employed or not employed in a relevant position.
• PER Standard Met: A student has met all the CPA Ontario Practical Experience requirements.

PPR students should only be requesting a review if they have had a change in employment, have met the CPA Practical Experience Requirements or have prior experience from a different employer/program.

EVR students should only be requesting a review based on their “Next CPA Review” date in PERT or if they have had a change in employment.

Before requesting a review, you will need to ensure your reports to be reviewed are in a “Verified” status. Reports not in a verified status will not be assessed. Please see “How do I get my practical experience reports verified in PERT?” in our FAQ for instructions.

To request a CPA Review, go to CPA Review tab, complete the required information and click “Request”.
